Axiotron Modservice takes your sad, disused Macbook, converts it into swanky new tablet

If you happen to have a spare MacBook lying around, and you’re at all intrigued by Axiotron’s ModBook tablets, you’ll probably be stoked to hear that the company is now taking orders on their website to convert personal MacBooks into the devices. Prices start at around $1,300 — far less than buying a new one, which go for a base price of $2,290. Modification kits are being sent out to a network of authorized modders, the nearest of which will contact you once you place your order to set up an appointment for the so-called “transformation.” You’re totally out of luck, however, if you were looking to have your brand new, aluminum MacBook “transformed” because they’re apparently “too cool” to submit to the keyboard denuding-degradation Axiotron requires. As if.

MacBook Pro requires logout to switch graphics modes

MacBook Pro requires logout to switch graphics modes

We just spent some quality time with the dual-graphics VAIO Z, so when we heard that the new MacBook Pros had a similar two-chip layout, we assumed switching from the integrated NVIDIA 9400M to the discrete 9600M GT would be just as easy — it’s just a switch on the Sony that can be flipped anytime. Too bad that’s not the case: according to a recently-posted Apple support document, switching graphics modes requires a trip to System Preferences and then a logout. Sure, it’s slightly better than a total restart, but it’s still a huge pain in the ass, and one we just don’t understand — if Sony can get Vista to handle it without issue, Apple should be able to get their own OS to deal. Here’s hoping Apple fixes this particular bag of hurt soon — we can’t see mobile pros flocking to this feature until they can seamlessly switch between graphics modes when going from the office to the road. Apple MacBook aluminum and glass super-shiny hands-on

We just got our grubby, oily hands all over this pristine, all glass and aluminum MacBook. We sullied it on your behalf, but our initial impressions mostly positive: it’s small, incredibly, ridiculously solid feeling, and we actually don’t hate the all-clicking trackpad much at all. (If your thumb muscle memory makes you click at the bottom where the button used to be, it works and feels pretty much the same.) Of course, the glare of the glass screen is a MAJOR issue for us, and will be pretty much forever. There’s just no way we’ll be able to love it, so our eyes will be peeled for after-market add-ons to cut that down a bit. But in terms of the rest, it’s pretty clear this is the best MacBook — and best mainstream consumer laptop — Apple’s made to date.

Apple's MacBook gets a fresh face, NVIDIA graphics, original drops to $999

Apple’s taking all that new MacBook Pro love and shrinking it down to size for the all-new MacBook. The laptop includes those same NVIDIA 9400M graphics, Mini DisplayPort plug, new manufacturing method, backlit keyboard and fancy glass trackpad of its big sibling, but does it with a 13.3-inch LED-backlit screen and typically friendly MacBook pricepoints. The laptop is 0.5 pounds lighter than its plastic predecessor, 0.95-inches thick, and Apple’s also claiming 5 hours of battery life here, but we’ll have to wait and see how realistic that number is. The base model weighs in at $1299 with a 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, while $1599 gets you 4GB of RAM and a 320GB HDD. There’s also an SSD option if you’re really looking to splurge. If none of the new speed or style appeals to you, Apple’s also slashing its existing low-end MacBook to $999, which is still a bit steep if you ask us. Hit the jump for a breakdown of the configurations. [ VIA engadget.com] Continue reading…

NVIDIA GeForce 9400 M, 9600M GT get official in new MacBooks

As expected, Apple has tapped NVIDIA’s new GeForce 9400 M as the base graphics for its new MacBook, MacBook Pro, and updated MacBook Air, which Steve Jobs himself says is five times faster than the current Intel integrated graphics they’ve been using. That’s aided in no small part by the chipset’s 16 parallel graphics cores, not to mention a generally beefier GPU that occupies a full 70% of the die area. If that’s not enough for you, Apple is also throwing NVIDIA’s 9600M GT into the MacBook Pro, which’ll give you two GPUs and either 256MB or 512MB of memory. That power will unsurprisingly come at the expense of some battery life, however, with the 9600 cutting things back to four hours from the five hours you can expect with the discrete GPU switched off. In the Q&A after the announcement, Apple also confirmed that it’d be the first taking the chipset to market, but that anything further is up to NVIDIA. Expect to hear more about that tomorrow, when NVIDIA is supposedly making its own announcement.

New MacBook Pro to feature removable battery and hard drive, according to latest leaked shots

It took a little while to come back around to them specifically, but if these pictures are any indication, Apple Insider’s MacBook leak way back in July had a pretty good grasp on things to come — even if it was frustratingly premature. New shots depicting the bottom of the new purported 15-inch MacBook Pro have surfaced on Chinese forum MacHome. The source confirms both a removable battery and a swappable hard drive for the upcoming laptop, with the whole bottom rear of the device lifting off to remove the goodies in store. Not not like this little tidbit is changing any opinions on the laptops due to be announced by Steve in a couple of hours, but hopefully it can serve as a filling, not fattening, snack to get you through to the keynote.

15.4-inch MacBook Shipping in May 2007

Sally told Susan told Johnny told Sally again that a 15.4-inch Macbook will be released in May 2007. We are actually a little disappointed at the news and would much prefer a smaller version of the notebook. And what the hell is Sally doing talking to Johnny again?

As much as I would agree with the kind folks at Gizmodo I don’t really mind variety. Besides my 12″ iBook is breaking my back (from slouching too much so I can look at my f***ing screen). Well I guess Steve Jobs is facing some real time dilemma here, it’s never easy to please us demanding users! ;)

Apple MacBook

Just when I started feeling bad about my sluggish iBook G4 Apple just had to rub it in and launched a new line of iBook crushers. The replacement models are dubbed MacBook sans the “Pro” and they come with built in iSight and a brighter 13-inch glossy widescreen display. The real kick is that the higher end model comes in sleek black. Armed with an Intel Core Duo processor it is 5X faster than the iBook G4. The only downer is that it doesn’t come with a dedicated graphics adapter. I knew there was a catch to their $1,099 starting price. The black one will cost you $1,499 though and it comes with an 80GB SATA hard drive, 512MB memory and a SuperDrive. Get them at the Apple Store.
