LG’s concept phone contest winners should please art house gadgetphiles

This item was filled under [ Mobile ]
When we see alluring phone concepts that’ll never leave the lab, we end up wishing there was a little more innovation in the handsets out in the wild. There was a wealth of eyebrow-raising examples of that principle when LG Japan exhibited top entries to its Mobile Design Contest last weekend. We’re keen on the fbt, a phone designed for braille text messaging, and the Tap, which is shaped like a light switch and functions like one too — when you tap it, the phone turns off so you can live once again in peace. The winner, though, was the above-pictured Planet Phone, the surface of which is dotted with LEDs representing your friends; if you don’t talk to someone for a while, their light gradually moves out to the edge. It’s supposed to remind you to keep in touch, but it has darker connotations — if you become angry with someone, you can revel in the pleasure of watching them slowly tick away into oblivion. That’s absolutely a feature we want to see added to the Storm.

Compact-esque LG Reveal and Shimmer Kit primping for Bell launch

The shock! The horror! We’re beginning to see signs of an absolutely impossible trend, one that just cannot be coming to fruition. Merely hours after spotting the compact-like Samsung CLEO comes an obvious rival: the LG Reveal. The chic flip phone is said to boast a full QWERTY keypad (for realz?), a black or purple motif, a 2.0-megapixel camera, built-in Bluetooth and a 2.4-inch display. Also of note, the handset will be offered with an exclusive Swarovski Crystal Bluetooth headset as part of the LG Shimmer Kit, and each one of these packages will lead to a $5 donation to Fashion Cares. Mum’s the word on pricing / exact availability, but we’d bet dollars to donuts that yet another makeup compact-turned-flip phone appears before too long. Even if it’s just in our nightmares.

LG's BD300 available and in the wild

LG’s BD300 Netflix / Blu-ray player may have been delayed in some instances, but it appears that all is well at Best Buy. One particular tipster has managed to acquire the deck and set it up proudly on top of his HD DVD player. He reported that a firmware update was required right from the get-go for Netflix streaming to be utilized, and once that was over, streaming commenced quickly and smoothly. He also noted that Netflix quality was only so-so, but his 2Mbps internet connection did limit the quality to just two out of four stars. Have a look at the in the wild shots below.

LG VX8360 gets pictured catalog-style, looks round

Last we’d heard, this bad boy is coming in just a couple weeks’ time, so it’s good to see some promotional materials floating around making mention of it, right? The VX8360 is said to feature a 1.3-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, EV-DO, microSD expansion, and if we had to venture an educated guess, we’d say a color secondary display with external music controls. Nothing to write home about, granted — but we’d be willing to bet Verizon is gonna part with these for a song.

US 3G version of LG’s KC910 pops up, speculation abounds

US 3G version of LGs KC910

US 3G version of LG's KC910

Based on what we’ve learned about LG’s KC910 (or the Renoir, as it’s affectionately known), we had all ideas it was being reserved for corners of the globe not named USA. But after taking one look at the specifications on the outfit’s Global web portal, we’re beginning to have second thoughts. Granted, this whole thing could just be a copy and paste blunder, but the 8-megapixel cellie sure shows up as having support for 850/900/1800/1900 GSM bands. Everything else looks par for the course, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t a wee bit excited about the possibilities here. Hold tight — we’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for more details.
