YoYotech Fi7epower MLK1610 PC is really, really fast

This item was filled under [ Computers ]

YoYotech is making no bones about their Fi7epower MLK1610 PC: according to them, it’s “the fastest PC in the world,” and “officially,” at that. Well then. The dubious value of such claims aside, the so-called “completely insane” MLK1610 houses an Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition CPU (overclocked to 3.73GHz) atop an X58 chipset, 9GB of DDR3 RAM, an 80GB Intel X25-M SSD, 1TB standard hard drive, a Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics card with 2GB of GDDR5 RAM, and it’s all sitting on ASUS’ P6T motherboard. P7etty sweet, right? It’s probably worth the £3,995.85 (about $6,337) you’re going to have to spend to make it yours, too. Oh — did we mention what a looker it is?

As you might expect, most sites are describing the CPU as a very big deal for Intel, with the folks at Maximum PC even going so far as to call it the company’s “most significant CPU launch in, well, ever.” Continue reading…

Intel to establish software center in Taiwan

This item was filled under [ IT News ]

TAIPEI, Taiwan – Intel Corp. announced Thursday it will join the Taiwanese government in setting up a Linux software center in Taiwan to help better market locally produced laptops and mobile Internet devices to the world.

The announcement by Intel Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini came after two leading Taiwanese computer makers launched “nettops” and “netbooks,” cheap and extremely portable laptops with wireless Internet access capabilities.

Both Taiwan-based Acer Inc. and Asustek Computer have adopted Intel’s latest Atom chips in their laptops, ranging from $300-$1000. The products allow their customers to choose between the Linux-based and Microsoft’s Windows operating systems. Linux is a freely distributed operating system

Otellini told reporters the software development center is being set up as part of Intel’s efforts to help Taiwan maintain its competitive edge in the field.

“The center’s engineers will provide training and consulting … to accelerate the adoption of mobile technologies,” he said. “These efforts aim to reduce the time to market for shipping Intel Atom processor- and Moblin-based systems.” Continue reading…

Intel's Core i7 purchased, overclocked, benchmarked

Looking for the latest in CPU spice to keep your gaming rig flowing? You’d better go find your wallet/purse and head to your local computer shop for a fresh Core i7 (née Nehalem), because they are apparently available for sale right now — before most of the major sites have even received theirs. User gooddog over at the Overclock.net forums has flaunted posted this picture of his recently purchased 3.2GHz Core i7 Extreme 965 CPU. Paired with an Asus P6T motherboard and running at the stock clock rate it scored a 5,606 in 3DMark06, in-line with what earlier testers found. O/C’ed up to 3.8GHz it delivered a tidy 6,608, a mark that surely gives it control of all benchmarks and, thus, the PC universe.

Intel Core i7 benchmarks make Core 2 Extreme look like a washed-up has-been

Intel Core i7 benchmarks make Core 2 Extreme look like a washed-up has-been

Presumably in an (utterly futile) attempt to bring down the power grid all around the Mediterranean, print magazine PC World Greece benchmarked three powerful Nehalem desktop processors — the Core i7 Extreme Edition 965, and the apparently non-extreme Core i7 920 and 940. Names aside, performance from all three was extreme compared to most stuff currently on the market. The data for number nerds: in 3DMark06 the 920 finished ever-so-slightly behind the Core 2 Extreme QX9770’s 4,922 marks with 4,818 while the 940 and the 965 both opened a can of you-know-what at 5,282 and 5,716 respectively. More titillating figures await enthusiasts through the read link, but for you normal folk only concerned that Nehalem wouldn’t be fast enough to justify an upgrade (and you weren’t), rest assured that it triumphed in this no-holds-barred CPU cage match.

Intel's Moblin OS for netbooks and MIDs gets a boost from Taiwan

Intel’s Linux-based Moblin OS may have lost some considerable ground to Windows XP in the netbook space, but it looks like the company is far from ready to throw in the towel, and it’s now getting a bit of a helping hand from the Taiwan government. Apparently, the government will be helping Intel open up a new development center in Taiwan, which will be tasked with furthering the development of the OS and, hopefully, attract the interest of local companies like ASUS and Acer. Any further specifics are expectedly a bit light at the moment, but the development center is apparently on the fast-track, with it reportedly set to open in December of this year.

Intel concedes ARM’s superiority over Atom, fake iPhone crisis averted

Intel concedes ARMs superiority over Atom

Intel concedes ARM's superiority over Atom

When low-level Intel execs throw down a verbal assault on Silicon Valley-buds Apple, guess what the result is? Fake fight! Fortunately, Intel’s Anand Chandrasekher just stepped in, referee-style, and dropped the retraction hammer on his loose-lipped, ARM-bashing underlings with the following correction:

“Intel’s low-power Atom processor does not yet match the battery life characteristics of the ARM processor in a phone form factor; and, that while Intel does have plans on the books to get us to be competitive in the ultra low power domain - we are not there as yet. Secondly, Apple’s iPhone offering is an extremely innovative product that enables new and exciting market opportunities. The statements made in Taiwan were inappropriate, and Intel representatives should not have been commenting on specific customer designs.”

So… friends, or are we doomed to repeat the whole toasted bunny thing again?

HP Vivienne Tam Mini-Note Has Intel Inside

It’s real, it’s covered in flowers, and it’s red. The Vivienne Tam HP Mini-Note is coming out in December–but not with a VIA processor. It’s got an Intel Atom, instead. Brad over at Liliputing is surprised given HP’s existing relationship with VIA. But the reigning opinion around here is that VIA’s processor isn’t the best, so it’s less of a shock.

Sure, the VIA Nano is meant to be an Atom killer, but, as Joanna pointed out, Atom has been nothing but impressive in netbooks. HP hasn’t yet said if they are dumping VIA for all of their netbooks, but their decision to put it in the flowery one meant for the fashionista set says a lot.

Toshiba refreshes pretty much every Satellite A / U / L-series ever

Satellite A / U / L-series ever

Toshiba aimed at the suits yesterday with the introduction of its Satellite Pro S300 and S300M, and today it’s finishing things off in one fell swoop. The Satellite U405 (pictured), Satellite M305, Satellite M305D, Satellite A355, Satellite A305, Satellite L305 and Satellite L355 are all being refreshed today in order to cram in newer (read: zippier) Intel / AMD CPUs, face recognition software, USB Sleep-and-Charge ports, an eSATA combo port, built-in FM tuner and ATI Hybrid CrossFireX graphics in select models. Outside of a few expected increases in speed, capacity and capability, there’s nothing here to really cheer about — particularly if you were never hot with passion about the designs in the first place.

Brazilian exhibition shows off low-cost laptop prototypes of old

Hard to believe it’s been over two years since we wrapped our noodles around the Intel Eduwise and the OLPC XO, and while the average Atom-powered netbook has practically swiped the limelight, the low-cost laptop still holds a special place in our hearts. So it’s with great joy that we present this mystical tour through the genealogy of the Classmate PC. On hand are a number of prototypes, a non-working mockup and a version of the Eduwise that actually retains the bulk of its hardware in the rear of the LCD. Heck, there’s even a bright blue convertible in there that could probably give Doom a run for its money. Unfortunately, the writeup is in translated English, but chances are the images will do the bulk of the speaking to your soul.

If that headline doesn’t get excited, may as well move on to the next story. Nothing to see here, folks! Except for a bad-ass processor that’s about to drop on November 17. If you’ve been following the Nehalem story, you know that it’s Intel’s microarchitecture “tock” to the 45nm process Penryn “tick.” You may have heard it referred to as “Core i7″ as well.[via Expreview and ZDNet] Continue reading…
