Intel to establish software center in Taiwan

This item was filled under [ IT News ]

TAIPEI, Taiwan – Intel Corp. announced Thursday it will join the Taiwanese government in setting up a Linux software center in Taiwan to help better market locally produced laptops and mobile Internet devices to the world.

The announcement by Intel Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini came after two leading Taiwanese computer makers launched “nettops” and “netbooks,” cheap and extremely portable laptops with wireless Internet access capabilities.

Both Taiwan-based Acer Inc. and Asustek Computer have adopted Intel’s latest Atom chips in their laptops, ranging from $300-$1000. The products allow their customers to choose between the Linux-based and Microsoft’s Windows operating systems. Linux is a freely distributed operating system

Otellini told reporters the software development center is being set up as part of Intel’s efforts to help Taiwan maintain its competitive edge in the field.

“The center’s engineers will provide training and consulting … to accelerate the adoption of mobile technologies,” he said. “These efforts aim to reduce the time to market for shipping Intel Atom processor- and Moblin-based systems.” Continue reading…

ISP’s confirm ‘2012: The Year The Internet Ends’

This item was filled under [ IT News ]

Bell Canada and TELUS (formerly owned by Verizon) employees officially confirm that by 2012 ISP’s all over the globe will reduce Internet access to a TV-like subscription model, only offering access to a small standard amount of commercial sites and require extra fees for every other site you visit. These ‘other’ sites would then lose all their exposure and eventually shut down, resulting in what could be seen as the end of the Internet.

Velodyne spells

We gave a heads up on Velodyne’s new Impact line of subwoofers just before CEDIA, and even though it’s taken a bit longer than we expected, now we have some details to share. There are three models to choose from: the Impact-Mini (6.5-inch forward-facing driver, a 8-inch passive radiator on the bottom and a 300-Watt amp), and the Impact-10 and Impact-12 featuring downward-firing ports, 250- and 275-Watt amps respectively, and driver sizes you can probably guess from the model names. Prices are definitely on the affordable end of Velodyne’s range, coming in at $549, $399 and $499 for the Impact-Mini, Impact-10 and Impact-12, respectively.    [ VIA www.engadget.com ]

ASUS at it again, calling out Gigabyte’s excessive copper usage

This item was filled under [ IT News ]

Oh ASUS, you bring us such joy. When this company isn’t busy diluting its Eee brand, it loves to pick fights with noted rivals, and this latest spat with Gigabyte (who isn’t at all innocent in this war) is wonderfully trivial. Apparently ASRock, ASUS’s budget motherboard wing, has taken it upon itself to inform hardware review websites like HEXUS of Gigabyte’s wasteful implementation of copper. The email ponders: “While the demand for copper keeps increasing and with that the price of this natural resource, why would manufacturers choose to use more copper without any valid reason?” And it gets better: “I [unidentified] am not talking about unnecessary heatpipes that most people do not need, but about Gigabyte’s ‘2 oz Copper PCB’. Gigabyte is adding more copper to the PCB to reduce the heat that is produced by their motherboard, and to spread it across the motherboard so that the heat will dissipate more quickly.” Naturally ASRock’s own P45 motherboard falls into none such pitfalls, offering better cooling with less copper, and they even provided a handy chart up above in case you don’t believe them, you idiot. Say no to waste!

Extensive Raon Digital Everun Note benchmarks

Following up on their previous coverage of the Raon Digital Everun Note, Lazion.com is back with a comprehensive set of benchmark results.

We saw impressive CrystalMark scores in the marketing material a few weeks ago and as you can see from the astonishing 40161 mark at right, those early scores definitely weren’t fabricated. To put the number into some context, my Sony Vaio TZ (Core 2 Duo U7500) and Willcom D4 (Atom Z520) got 31676 and 16445, respectively.

It’s obvious that the Everun Note’s Turion 64 X2 dual-core is ridiculously powerful when maxed out, but what happens when the UMPC’s battery-friendly power saving mode is used? Continue reading…

T-Mobile attempts to mitigate customer service costs with Nuance Mobile Care

This item was filled under [ IT News ]

In a growing effort to keep costly CSRs from spending entirely too much time trying to explain how to activate a speakerphone over the, um, phone, T-Mobile has inked a deal with Nuance Communications to bring an on-device application to select mobiles. Essentially, the Mobile Care software will rear its head whenever someone with one of the aforementioned handsets dials up customer service; from there, an “intuitive, user-friendly” guide attempts to walk users through “issues such as diagnosing and repairing configuration problems as well as with making account and billing inquiries.” T-Mobile asserts that trials of the service have shown that customers actually prefer this over a live human, which probably has everything to do with the wait times that invariably come with calling a fellow Earthling. Still, we can imagine quite a few smashed phones deriving from frustrations with this computerized service, at least one of which we hope to get captured on video for posting.

GE builds an OLED printer, hopes to challenge light bulbs in 2010

GE builds an OLED printer

GE builds an OLED printer

Maybe the incandescent light bulb has been sitting in its socket-shaped throne for too many years — GE thinks so, anyway. GE R&D guys have produced a machine that prints OLED materials newspaper-style onto 8-inch sheets of metal foil in hopes that the sheets — which can be pinned to just about any surface — will start the process of home lighting biz regime change in 2010. Picture, if you will, wallpaper or window blinds that provide soft, diffused lighting for the living room after dark — no need for special fixtures, just a wall plug. OLED lighting isn’t yet cost-efficient for the average consumer, but GE hopes that will change soon. In the meantime, expect to see these sheets in a trip-out Flaming Lips concert in the somewhat-near future.

FCC Fridays

We here at Engadget Mobile tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there, we’ve gathered up all the raw info you may want (but probably don’t need). Enjoy!

Nex-Tech / Redline bringing WiMAX to Kansas

While Sprint’s XOHM network is sticking to the bustling metropolises of the US, Redline is looking to bring the wonders of 4G to those sitting in rural America. Granted, this here deployment isn’t the first we’ve seen in a less-than-dense locale, but thanks to its RedMAX infrastructure products and Nex-Tech’s desire to spread the love, a number of cities in the Sunflower State are about to get blanketed with WiMAX. More specifically, we’re told that Hays (see above) and Great Bend will get covered by next month, but we’re left to assume, er, hope that neighboring towns will fall under the umbrella in due time.
