There was a day during an age not far removed from our memory in which Apple would remain dead silent on any murmuring going on regarding its wares — clearly, that day has passed. In a rather unprecedented move, an actual spokesman named Bill Evans emerged from the Cupertino cocoon in order to put to rest all those wildly speculative rumors going on about new iMacs and / or Mac minis. Quite frankly, he uttered that “[Apple's] holiday line-up is set.” Our take? This move is likely being made in order to assure prospective holiday shoppers that buying now is “safe,” and that new gear isn’t just weeks / days / nanoseconds away. C’mon, you know a well-oiled machine like Apple doesn’t want all sorts of about-to-be-outdated Mac inventory clogging its supply chain when Macworld rolls around, don’tcha?

It’s a next-generation operating system and mirror all in one!

If you happen to have a spare MacBook lying around, and you’re at all intrigued by Axiotron’s ModBook tablets, you’ll probably be stoked to hear that the company is now taking orders on their website to convert personal MacBooks into the devices. Prices start at around $1,300 — far less than buying a new one, which go for a base price of $2,290. Modification kits are being sent out to a network of authorized modders, the nearest of which will contact you once you place your order to set up an appointment for the so-called “transformation.” You’re totally out of luck, however, if you were looking to have your brand new, aluminum MacBook “transformed” because they’re apparently “too cool” to submit to the keyboard denuding-degradation Axiotron requires. As if.

While suits from Psystar and Apple are currently attempting to work things out via alternative dispute resolution, the former company is doing something the latter company won’t: offer OS X-capable machines with built-in Blu-ray and NVIDIA’s GeForce 9800GT. Showing no mercy whatsoever in a recent release, Psystar calls Steve Jobs out for his controversial “bag of hurt” comment and proceeds to inform the general public that it’s “now shipping” OS X-compatible PCs (better known as Open Computers) with Blu-ray optical drives and the GeForce 9800GT GPU. Based on pricing figures gathered from the company’s website, a 6x Blu-ray writer is a $310 upgrade over a dual-layer DVD burner, while the 512MB GeForce 9800GT will set you back $200 more than the 8600GT. Whatcha got to say now, Steve? Huh? Huh?

The Mac Mini might not be dead after all, as a new report suggests Apple might be adding Mini DisplayPort to the back of the computer.

Apple’s Mac Mini might be getting a reprieve after all.
A few days after Gizmodo reported that European retailers believed the Mac Mini was heading for the exits, AppleInsider says the smallest and cheapest Mac hasn’t left the building. Apparently a number of casinos in Las Vegas use Mac Minis to help run the ever-present security cameras in that city, and those customers believe that an update is around the corner.
One Las Vegas-based source who runs a collocation service based on the Mac Mini told AppleInsider that there are about 10,000 Mac Minis in use in Sin City. He believes that Apple is planning to release an updated Mac Mini in the near future that takes a few cues from the recent notebook launch, such as the addition of a Mini DisplayPort connection and the ability to address 4GBs of RAM.
If true, it would make sense that retailers were told not to expect any more of the older Mac Minis, in order to make way for the new models. The Mac Mini has been rumored to be on the way out more than once, and gotten up off the canvas each time. Apple might not yet be ready to part with the cute cube.
Apple has joined Google in publicly opposing a California ballot initiative that would deny marriage rights to same-sex couples.
The company announced Friday that it would donate $100,000 to the No on Prop 8 campaign, which opposes a measure to ban gay marriage that California voters will consider a week from Tuesday. Google has also spoken out against the ballot measure.
“Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights–including the right to marry–should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8,” the company said in a statement posted to the Hot News section of its Web site.
