JVC’s HTIB NX-BD3 gets reviewed, passes muster

This item was filled under [ Entertainment ]

Even after the street adjustment to £500 ($782), JVC’s recently-announced NX-BD3 may not be the cheapest Blu-ray HTIB, but the crew at TrustedReviews found a lot to like with the package. The 2.1-channel starter system — there are taps for four speakers even though you only get a L/R pair in the box — has good aesthetics, solid video performance that holds its own next to the Pioneer BDP-LX71, and audio that keeps up with the visuals. Pity that Dolby True HD and DTS-HD MA didn’t make the cut, though. Continue reading…

Toshiba’s XD-E500 player: now with free 1-year Lovefilm subscription in UK

This item was filled under [ Entertainment ]

We won’t even front: we questioned the value in Toshiba’s super-upscaling XD-E500 DVD player, but the company is making the pill a lot easier to swallow for those on the opposite side of the pond. Starting now, those who purchase the player and register it within seven days are blessed with a full year of DVD rentals from Lovefilm (a British DVD rental company). The year of rentals is technically worth £100, thus making the net cost of the player itself just £20 (£120 minus £100) if you’re keen on twisting your math. So, Tosh — when can we Americans expect a similar deal with Netflix?

SNIF Tags go commercial, promise to monitor your dog’s activity

This item was filled under [ Gadgets ]

They’ve been keeping tabs on dogs around MIT for a few years now, but it looks like the activity-monitoring SNIF Tags are now finally making their public, and commercial, debut. Unlike some other devices that track your dog’s whereabouts with GPS, these make use of an accelerometer and some motion analysis software to determine exactly how active your dog is, all of which gets logged online via the included SNIF base station that connects to your router.

New SNES portable is heavy on the SNES, light on the portable

This item was filled under [ Games ]
The SNES has certainly proven to be one of the most popular consoles to get the portable treatment among those go-getter console modders out there, and it looks like it’s not showing any signs of losing that status, with this so-called SNEP (Super Nintendo Entertainment Portable) only the latest to pop up on our radar.

Epson PowerLite Cinema 700 costs only slightly more dollars than its horizontal line count

This item was filled under [ Projectors ]

We’re sorry you lost your fortune in the global financial crisis, but we’ve got some news to cheer you up — you might still be able to plaster your living room wall with HD video. Epson just launched the PowerLite Cinema 700, a 720p home theater projector that it claims is the first to retail at $799. Sure, they’ve made this kind of claim before, and it’s true that if you look hard enough you’ll probably find a couple other 720p projectors at that price, but we’re not gonna make a fuss — this 3LCD projector is a decent deal, what with it doing 2,000 lumens and having a 2,000:1 contrast ratio. It’s already available in Epson’s online store — or, at least it would be if it wasn’t sold out at the moment. Guess some other economically depressed folks thought it was a decent deal, too!

NEC launches PowerMate P4000 and P6000 all-in-ones

This item was filled under [ Notebooks ]
We’ve noticed a pattern with NEC — compact, minimalist computer designs with low-end to run-of-the-mill specs. There’s nothing wrong with having a specialty, and NEC Asia Pacific is sticking with what it knows with the PowerMate P4000 and P6000 all-in-ones. The P4000 is a light worker (to put it perhaps too kindly), with a 1.9GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor, 1GB of RAM, 250GB of hard disk space, an NVIDIA GeForce 9100M G integrated graphics chip, and a 16-inch display at 1366 x 768. We’d go instead for the P6000 (pictured above), which is actually competitive with similarly priced all-in-ones like the Gateway One.

EOps “high concept” wireless iPod speakers strongly resemble a cheap desk lamp

This item was filled under [ Mobile ]
We’ve seen our fair share of iPod speakers around here, and all too often they resemble boom boxes or clock radios (or sometimes both). Now, thanks to the combined efforts of EOps and industrial designer Michael Young, we finally have something that appears equally suited to the home, office and Korova Milk Bar. The i24R3 consists of an iPod dock / 40W subwoofer and two (upgradable to eight) 3-inch 20W satellite speakers, all in a fetching pure gloss white and aluminum casing.

Vertu’s Signature S Design gets handled — gently

At a staggering 242,380 Czech crowns (about $12,331), Vertu’s latest Signature S Design model certainly isn’t for everybody — in fact, we’d venture to say that it’s very nearly for nobody — but putting the positively stupid pricing aside for a moment, you have to admit that this thing is beautiful in its own way. AT&T taking Samsung a867 Eternity orders from stores, should be available this week

This item was filled under [ Mobile ]

We’re hearing that the MediaFLO-packing, TouchWiz-having, HSDPA-sporting Samsung Eternity is now available for order by AT&T stores, and when this happens, phones are typically available for purchase at the counter within a few days. It’ll be an interesting alternative to the Vu — and for AT&T customers looking longingly toward the Behold, this might just be the ticket to staying put.

iriver’s wave touchphone hits Korea on March 9th

This item was filled under [ Mobile ]

After teasing us with a touchscreen phone way back at CES this January, iriver has been decidedly mum on the subject ever since, calling what we saw more of a “proof of concept” than a ready-for-market product. Well, that veil has been lifted and we’re finally staring at the iriver wave, a touchphone that iriver plans to start shipping in Korea on March 9th of next year with KT, and with other major carriers to follow. Other than a touchscreen, the phone packs WiFi and the traditional kitchen sink approach of Korean PMPs, with multimedia playback, FM radio, e-books and an electronic dictionary. There’s miniSD expansion, access to the Bugs Music Service for online music and we’re sure a few other perks hidden under layers of Korean spec sheets. Overall the physical design hasn’t really changed much from what we saw at the start of the year (looks like that 3-inch, 480 x 272 touchscreen is quite intact), but the software has certainly been refined, and is devoid of many of its original, erm, iPhone-inspired touches.
